Apple FTW!

Posted on 17 December 2010 by Nate

Ok so here is the story.  So at my place of work I’m called the Apple prophet.  (I have other nicknames but those are for another day) I love Apple products and have about 90K worth of the computers in my room alone let alone the other departments I convinced to make a switch.  When I started we had about 3, now there are around 200!

I have an iPhone I have had an iPhone from the first gen.  I still use it as an e-reader.  my 16GB 3GS early on started getting loads of dust under the screen.  it looked like it wasn’t installed properly so I bought it in and they replaced the screen in 5 minutes.  it was still a little off like it wasn’t all the way in on one side, I was assured that it was within their standards and it should be fine.  Otherwise the phone worked beautifully.

Now here is the thing.  I use my phone for everything.  I use it to monitor 45 computers through VNC (Jaduu), I monitor and remotely control a few servers and media displays with it, I have all my email on it, calendars, etc. it is my primary form of entertainment and I use it more often than my 2 laptops for my job.  with 216 apps and files on the phone and no room for music it is a work horse.

A year and a half later problems arises.  I have had my phone screen replaced 5 times since the first time. no problem.  The guys at the Apple store know me by now so it was always a quick fix.  but this time I bring it in and it turns out Warranty has been up for a while.  Bummer right, lots of dust under the screen really affects your daily use oddly enough.  But hey the phone works fine so Ill put up with it until July when I get a new phone with my wife.

Disaster strikes.  I get a text and my phone only vibrates a small bit and then stops…then I feel the entire case shake violently and the motor sounds like it is hitting the rear of the case.  Then nothing.  No vibrating for a day. A miracle the next morning everything is fine.  Whew! then it happens sporadically throughout the week.

More disaster. Every time my phone gets between 50-30% battery there is a good chance it will just shut off regardless of what is happening. No specific app or repeatable process.  Nuts a nightmare.  How can I use a phone for only 30 minutes at a time if it dies.  Sadly these crashes are hard crashes and sometimes it starts right back up and other times it takes a hour and must be plugged in.  Super lame.

I do a restore and see if that helps.  No such luck.  its December 13th I don’t want to deal with this especially in a Mall and with  crowd. But my wife is tired of my screams at my phone so we go in to the Apple store @ San Jose Oakridge Mall.

My wife explains to the manager Ralph the issue and everything going on.  Ralph takes the phone looks at it takes it in the back.  now my pnone isnt pretty the coating on the back has 3 holes worn through and there is a series of cracks up the back.  the power port is scratched up from picking out lint and dirt.  Apparently the water mark is activated but it even has a crack.

I love my phone it is just used al day long.  I never drop it or anything its just use.  Ralph understands.  Oddly enough I have not met him yet considering my multiple trips.  This guy saves my life and gives me a replacement.  Out of warrnty, water damaged, and looks like crap.  This guy knows how to keep a customer.  Because with ATT being steaming crap there are some other fun phones I was willing to try out.

So Apple Tanks for an amazing product.  and thank you for Hiring Ralph and Johnny who are great guys who knew the importance of keeping a customer.  Ill still be getting an iPhone 4G(“s” I’m assuming in July) but now I wont have to get an Android phone while I wait. and Ill remember how amazing it felt to get my phone replaced.  and I will tell everyone I know about my experience as well.

Good Work Apple
